While this theory has been vigorously vetted by scientist who had held hopes that this system would be available to carry medicine trans-dermally into our bodies, a study done in 2013 by the University of Southern Denmark showed that liposomes lose their cargo the moment they meet the skin’s surface. In 2016 the study was repeated using new methods and once again established that liposomes cannot penetrate the skin’s surface.
The study is published in the journal PLOS One. The authors include postdoc Jes Dreier and Associate Professor Jonathan Brewer from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark.
